Art and Apparatus. The Work of John Knight, 1969 – 2013

The work of the American artist John Knight since 1969 propelled and to the present partakes in the radical redefinition of artistic practice: In Knight’s projects contextual parameters take precedence over a concept of the art work that operates exclusively within the framework of the image as well as the conventions and morphologies of traditional mediums. The proposition here is that significant works by Knight consequently allow a transitive notion of the image to come to the fore: images do not appear as discrete, stable objects, but are defined—like logos, trademarks and pictograms—in terms of their circulation, propagation, and modification.

Knight’s exhibitions in situ, in which the categories of object, medium, and site are systematically scrutinized and challenged against the backdrop of the transition from a society of spectacle to a society of control, are not contained within the museum alone but rather address a complex network, or apparatus, of institutions, discourses, and media. From the perspective of this monographic dissertation project, the processes and procedures of generating Evidenz can thus not be separated from the effects of images’ peregrination.
